Pieces of a Puzzle: The Link Between Eating Disorders and ADD

by Carolyn Piver Dukarm, MD

Dr. Dukarm wrote this book to serve as an informative resource and a practical guide for the many individuals with eating disorders, specifically bulimia and binge eating disorder, who additionally suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADD).

In many individuals, ADD goes undiagnosed and untreated. Treating core symptoms of ADD such as impulsivity, distractibility, and difficulty paying attention can significantly improve many eating disorder symptoms.

Treating the underlying ADD in individuals with eating disorders can lead to significant improvement in symptoms, thus reducing the risk of significant illness and the potential for death in severe cases. In Pieces of a Puzzle: The Link between Eating Disorders and ADD, Dr. Dukarm discusses the overlap between these two disorders and provides a description of the nutritional changes, cognitive interventions, and medication and supplements that encompass a comprehensive treatment plan.

With its user-friendly question-and-answer format, Dr. Dukarm's book is easy to read and understand. It is divided into six sections which cover the spectrum from diagnosis to treatment of both disorders. Each section contains guidelines and specific action steps that the reader can take. Participation is encouraged through directed questions and exercises.
